Your SEO strategy may include:

  • Keyword and competitor research based on your services, customers and target areas.
  • On-page SEO and useful content that matches what potential customers are searching for.
  • Technical improvements that help search engines crawl, understand and index your website.
  • Google Business Profile, review and local-citation improvements.
  • Relevant link-building and local authority development.
  • Conversion tracking and plain-English reporting focused on meaningful results.

I am based near Brampton and work directly with businesses across Cumbria. There are no account managers and no outsourcing: you speak to the person researching, planning and implementing the work.

SEO Results for Small Businesses

SEO should support business goals, not just produce a longer list of rankings. Depending on the project, that may mean increasing qualified enquiries, recovering visibility after a redesign, reaching customers in more of the right locations or reducing reliance on paid traffic.

Recent work has included:

  • Improving local visibility for a small service business: following a website redesign and focused local SEO work, the business gained Google Map Pack visibility for an important service and website traffic increased by 1,500% from its previous low base.
  • Recovering traffic lost after a redesign: after a technical audit, corrective work and full on-page optimisation, a home-renovation business increased website traffic by 400% during the first four months and recorded £11,000 in attributable return.
  • Improving the quality of accountancy enquiries: a regional accountancy firm was attracting broad traffic but too many irrelevant leads. A more focused service-and-location strategy improved the relevance of its visibility and enquiries within three months.

Every website, market and starting point is different, so these examples are not guarantees. Before work begins, I agree the outcomes that matter to your business and establish a baseline from which we can measure progress.

SEO Consultant Cumbria

SEO That Helps Customers Find and Choose Your Business

A potential customer may encounter your business in the Google Map Pack, in the standard organic results, through an individual service or location page, or as a supporting source within an AI search result. A complete SEO strategy considers all of these routes rather than chasing one keyword position.

The aim is to make three things clear:

  • Relevance: what you offer, who it is for and which searches your pages genuinely answer.
  • Location: where your business is based and the places you can realistically serve.
  • Trust: why a customer , and Google, should have confidence in your business and its information.

For local results, Google largely considers relevance, distance and prominence. SEO can strengthen your relevance and prominence, but it cannot change the distance between your business and the searcher or guarantee a place in the Map Pack. I will always be honest about what is achievable in each target area.

Your website and Google Business Profile have different roles, but they should present a consistent picture. Your profile helps customers find and assess you in Search and Maps; your website provides the detailed service information, local evidence and answers they need before making contact.

Local SEO In Cumbria

SEO Services for Cumbrian Businesses

No two businesses need exactly the same work. I begin by finding the barriers and opportunities that matter most, then prioritise the activity most likely to improve relevant visibility and enquiries.

SEO Audits and Strategy

An SEO audit should do more than produce a long list of warnings from a software tool. I review how search engines access and interpret the site, how its important pages perform, where competitors have an advantage and whether current visibility matches the services and locations that matter to the business.

The findings are prioritised by likely impact, urgency and the effort required. Where data is available, I also establish baselines in Google Search Console, Google Analytics and Google Business Profile so future changes can be assessed properly.

Keyword Research, Search Intent and Page Mapping

Keyword research is not simply a list of high-volume phrases. I look at the language customers use, the intent behind each search, the competitiveness of the results and how valuable that search is likely to be to your business.

I then map related searches to the most appropriate page. This helps decide whether you need a stronger core service page, a genuinely useful location page, a product or category page, or an article that answers an earlier-stage question. It also prevents several pages from competing for the same subject, known as keyword cannibalisation.

Not every service-and-town combination needs its own page. Where location pages are useful, they should contain meaningful local information and reflect a genuine service area—not repeat the same text with only the town name changed.

On-Page SEO and Content Improvement

I improve existing pages and plan new content around the questions, concerns and decisions customers have before contacting you. This can include service copy, location information, case studies, FAQs, product or category content and supporting guides.

On-page work may include:

  • Page titles and meta descriptions that accurately describe the result and encourage the right click.
  • One clear main heading and a logical hierarchy of supporting headings.
  • Copy that answers the search intent without forced repetition or keyword stuffing.
  • Internal links that help visitors and search engines reach related services and useful information.
  • Original examples, project evidence, images, accreditations and author or business details that support trust.
  • Clear next steps, calls to action and contact routes.

The objective is not content for content’s sake. It is to give each important page a clear purpose and make it genuinely more useful than the alternatives a customer is comparing.

Local SEO and Google Business Profile Optimisation

For businesses that depend on customers in a defined area, I optimise the website and Google Business Profile as one connected local presence.

Depending on the business, this can include:

  • Checking profile eligibility, ownership and verification issues.
  • Selecting accurate primary and secondary categories.
  • Improving services, business descriptions, opening hours, attributes, photos and customer-facing links.
  • Keeping addresses or service areas accurate and compliant with Google’s guidelines.
  • Checking that business names, addresses and phone numbers are consistent across important listings.
  • Finding and correcting duplicate or inaccurate citations.
  • Creating an ethical process for requesting genuine reviews and responding helpfully.
  • Monitoring local visibility across agreed searches and locations.

Google Business Profile posts, photos and updates can also help keep the profile useful and current for customers. I do not present them as a shortcut or promise that one profile change will guarantee higher rankings.

Technical SEO

Strong content can still underperform if search engines cannot reliably crawl, render, index or understand the website. I investigate the technical issues that could affect visibility and prioritise fixes according to their real impact.

Checks may include:

  • Crawlability, indexation and accidental blocking.
  • XML sitemaps, robots directives and canonical URLs.
  • Redirect chains, broken links, error pages and incorrect status codes.
  • Duplicate, thin or competing pages.
  • Site structure, navigation and internal linking.
  • Mobile usability, page speed and Core Web Vitals.
  • JavaScript rendering where important content or links depend on it.
  • Structured data that is relevant, valid and consistent with the visible page content.
  • HTTPS, mixed-content and other technical quality issues.

I explain which findings need action, which can wait and which automated-tool warnings are unlikely to make a meaningful difference.

Local Authority, Links and Digital PR

Links and mentions from relevant websites can help customers discover your business and support its authority. For a Cumbrian business, useful opportunities might include respected local organisations, industry bodies, suppliers, partners, community groups, event websites and genuine local press coverage.

I research opportunities that make sense for the business and favour relevance, editorial value and real relationships over volume. I do not recommend buying bulk backlinks, adding the site to hundreds of poor-quality directories or using tactics designed only to manipulate rankings.

Analytics, Conversion Tracking and Reporting

Rankings and traffic provide context, but they do not tell the whole story. Where the website and consent setup allow it, I measure the actions that matter: calls, forms, bookings, purchases, email clicks or other agreed conversions.

Reporting can bring together data from Google Search Console, Google Analytics, Google Business Profile and rank tracking. A useful monthly report should tell you:

  • What work was completed.
  • Which queries, pages and locations are gaining or losing visibility.
  • Whether organic visitors are taking meaningful actions.
  • What has been learned from the data.
  • What should be prioritised next.

I also consider the relevance of the enquiries being generated. More traffic is not an improvement if it brings people looking for services, locations or prices that the business does not offer.

SEO for AI Overviews and AI-Assisted Search

AI Overviews and other AI-assisted search experiences are changing how some people discover and compare businesses. There is no special “AI SEO” switch, guaranteed inclusion method or separate schema markup that makes a website appear.

The practical foundations remain familiar: important pages must be accessible and indexable, information should be clear and accurate, internal links should make content easy to find, structured data should agree with visible content, and genuine expertise should be supported by evidence.

I structure important information so that both people and search systems can understand it, while keeping the main focus on the potential customer—not writing unnatural copy for an algorithm.

SEO for Website Redesigns, Migrations and Traffic Loss

A redesign or domain change can improve a website while unintentionally damaging its established search visibility. Pages may be removed, URLs changed, internal links broken or valuable content replaced without a suitable redirect plan.

I can support a redesign or migration by benchmarking performance before launch, reviewing proposed URLs and content, mapping redirects, checking canonicals and indexation, and monitoring Search Console and Analytics afterwards. If traffic has already fallen, I compare the old and new site, identify the most likely causes and prioritise recovery work.

Local SEO Across Cumbria

Many Cumbrian businesses serve a mixture of towns, villages and rural communities rather than one compact city market. A business may be based near Brampton, Penrith or Kendal but travel across a much wider area. Others depend on visitors who search before arriving in the Lake District.

That makes genuine location planning important. I assess where demand exists, which areas the business can serve competitively and whether the website has enough real information to justify a dedicated location page. Useful local evidence might include completed work, customer examples, delivery or travel details, photographs, local partnerships and clear coverage information.

A Google Business Profile service-area setting does not make a business rank equally across every selected town. For locations further from the business, the realistic strategy may rely more heavily on strong organic service/location pages, local reputation, relevant links and evidence that the business genuinely operates there.

I support businesses across Cumbria, including Carlisle, Penrith, Kendal, the Lake District and surrounding communities.

SEO for Trades and Service-Area Businesses

Trades and mobile service businesses often need visibility across several locations, and many searches have urgent or high commercial intent. The website should make the service, availability, coverage area, credentials and fastest contact method immediately clear—especially on mobile.

The strategy may include focused service pages, carefully chosen location pages, project evidence, review generation, Google Business Profile optimisation and tracking for calls or quote requests.

SEO for Professional, Health and Wellbeing Services

Accountants, solicitors, consultants, therapists, dentists and other professional services need more than a location reference. Potential clients also look for expertise, confidentiality, qualifications, fees, process and reassurance that the service suits their situation.

SEO work therefore combines technical and local visibility with detailed service pages, clear trust signals, helpful answers and an easy route to enquire or book.

SEO for Tourism and Hospitality

Hotels, holiday cottages, B&Bs, cafés, restaurants, attractions and activity providers often serve visitors who are researching from outside Cumbria. Search demand may be seasonal and tied to a destination, event, amenity or type of stay rather than the business’s postal address alone.

Useful work may include destination and area content, seasonal planning, accommodation or attraction details, relevant structured data, review strategy, strong imagery, mobile performance and pages that answer specific visitor needs such as accessibility, parking, pet policies, family facilities or nearby activities.

SEO for Local Retailers and Ecommerce Businesses

For retailers, WooCommerce stores and Shopify businesses, SEO may also involve category structure, product discoverability, duplicate or filtered URLs, product information, structured data and Merchant Center consistency. Ecommerce sites and large catalogues usually require a tailored scope because their technical and content requirements differ from a small local service website.

Search Engine Optimisation Cumbria

Why Ongoing SEO Matters

SEO is not a one-time checklist. Competitors publish new pages, search results change, websites develop technical issues and customers use new ways to research services. Once the foundations are sound, progress often comes from a steady cycle of improvement: refine priority pages, answer new customer questions, strengthen local signals, earn relevant authority and learn from performance data.

Monthly support is suitable when there is enough ongoing opportunity to justify it. If a one-off audit, setup project or limited group of fixes is more appropriate, I will say so rather than recommend a retainer by default.

SEO Packages

Flexible monthly SEO services designed to improve rankings, traffic and enquiries

These SEO packages are intended as a guide, as every business has different goals, challenges and priorities. Before recommending a package, I’ll take the time to understand your business, what you’d like to achieve and the level of support you need. I can then tailor the service to suit you, rather than asking you to pay for work that may not be relevant to your business.
